Mardi Gras with Sonesta

A Carnival of Color and Culture

History

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is a historic celebration rooted in New Orleans. Originating from ancient Roman festivals, Mardi Gras has evolved over centuries, blending cultural influences.

The first recorded parade in New Orleans was in 1837, marking the beginning of a vibrant tradition. Today, Mardi Gras continues to captivate with parades, masks, and a festive atmosphere.

Greasing of the Poles is a quirky Mardi Gras tradition, held for over fifty years at The Royal Sonesta New Orleans. This annual event, held the Friday before Mardi Gras, features celebrity guests, live music, and raucous entertainment as participants attempt to climb up the hotel’s famous Bourbon Street balconies. Originally a practical measure to deter revelers, Greasing of the Poles is now a beloved New Orleans tradition – and the unofficial kickoff to Mardi Gras weekend.

What to Expect at New Orleans Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras 2027

Mardi Gras events in New Orleans begin as early as January 5, 2027, or Twelfth Night, the start of the Carnival season. For the main event, families and first-timers may enjoy “tamer” festivities starting in late January, and running throughout the first weekend of Mardi Gras. Parties and parades roll through the French Quarter nonstop starting Wednesday, February 3 – culminating with the biggest celebrations on Fat Tuesday, February 9, 2027.

Since Mardi Gras is tied to Easter, 2027 will be a slightly shorter Carnival season. Guests can expect slightly cooler temps and a tighter parade schedule during New Orleans’ most famous festival.
